Yes, this baked apple chips recipe is very healthy. It is just a little bit of sugar for 2 whole apples, so they are definitely a nice alternative to sugary snacks or traditional chips making them a great healthy snacking option. You are going to love this super easy and healthy snack idea.

These apple chips are as close to eating a fresh apple slice as it gets! Since the apple chips are dried in the oven, they are crunchy like a potato chip, but they definitely pack a lot more nutrition. Dried apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon are high in fiber, which will help you feel full longer. They are also loaded with Vitamin C, which is great for immune boosting. Not to mention the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties of cinnamon. All around they are good for you, just don’t tell the kids!

Now, while you won’t need a dehydrator to make this recipe, I do highly recommend that you purchase an apple corer or an apple slicer to make easy work of prepping the apples.

I just think this Apple Corer is just simply awesome. It is the one I used for the pictures in this post. It is great because then you can slice the apples in perfect rings using a knife or mandolin. However, I also love this apple peeler and slicer. I only have to dirty one tool and I have to admit, it’s kind of fun to watch them peel and slice! You will use this and then cut them in half which would give you half-moon shaped chips, but they will still taste amazing. It doesn’t matter which one you get, but I do suggest you get one or the other. It will make your life much easier when making this apple chips recipe.

What apples are best for apple chips?

To make apple chips you want an apple that is going to hold up to being dried and also have some natural sweetness. Golden Delicious, Gala, Fuji, and Pink Lady apples tend to have the best results. My favorite apple usually is the Golden Delicious or Gala, both of which are usually pretty easy to find at the grocery store.

If you want a tart dried apple Granny Smith and Macintosh are great options. Honestly, though, any kind of apple will work, the end flavor and texture will just vary. Just keep in mind that the dried version will be a more intense flavor than the fresh version.

  • 2 Granny Smith Apples
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon

How to make apple chips:

Let’s talk about how to make apple chips in the oven very easily. Again you don’t need any fancy machines to make these crispy chips!

  • Preheat oven to 240 degrees.

  • Core each apple and slice thin (about ⅛ inch thick) with a mandolin slicer. You can use a sharp knife if you do not have a mandolin, just make sure you slice them as uniform as possible so that they get finished around the same time.

  • Mix cinnamon and sugar together and sprinkle over the thinly sliced apples.

  • On a metal baking sheet, place apples in a single layer and bake for 1 hour to 2 hours. Check progress and continue baking until edges curl and chips are dry. Time will vary by ovens and thickness of apple slices.

  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool and completely dry.

How long do dried apple slices last?

If you’ve dried your apples completely, they will stay in an airtight container is cool, dry place, between 6 and 12 months. We’ve never been able to keep ours that long because the kids gobble them up pretty quickly!
