Apricot Glaze Recipe

Our version is a family favorite because of the delicious apricot glaze. We opted out of adding honey and replace it with the more complex flavor for the sweetness with apricot glaze. The fruit flavors of the apricots really shine through and add such brightness and depth of flavor to the ham. If you have a tried and true honey baked ham family recipe, consider switching it up for one occasion for the apricot glaze. It’s always nice to have a variety of glazes and to have fun with different flavors.

Can you freeze this Ham?

Yes, you can! It’s great for freezing. We like to cut the leftovers into smaller portions before freezing them. That way, we just thaw out the package that’s enough for one dinner. Or we’ll thaw some extra for a breakfast of ham and eggs.

Apricot Glazed Baked Ham

Feel free to use a smaller or larger ham. Cooking time is about 12-14 minutes per pound. You’re basically re-heating it all the way though the center, but don’t want to over cook it to where it’s dry. Use a thermometer to monitor the internal temperature to be about 140°F/60°C for an already fully cooked ham.

Ingredients

  • 10 lb. (4.54 kg) boneless , fully cooked ham

Apricot Glaze

  • 1 cup (234 g) apricot jam
  • 1/4 cup (55 g) brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) orange juice (or 1 orange juiced)
  • 2 Tablespoons (30 ml) mustard (optional) or apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) Cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) Clove
  • black pepper , to taste

Instructions

  • Remove ham from package and netting. If it’s been refrigerated, if possible let it sit out for about 1 hour to take a bit of the chill off. If ham is not pre-sliced, score the ham with shallow 1/2-inch/12mm criss-cross cuts.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F/175°C. Lay ham cut side down on a baking dish and cover tightly with aluminum foil. Don’t let any steam enter or escape the foil so that the ham doesn’t dry out.

  • Bake the ham for about 2 hours (12-14 minutes per pound, or per the package instructions).

  • While the Ham Bakes - Make the Glaze: In a saucepan, combine the brown sugar glaze ingredients (apricot jam, brown sugar, orange juice, optional mustard, cinnamon, clove, and black pepper). Heat and whisk until brown sugar is dissolved and glaze is well combined.

  • About 20 minutes before the ham is finished, brush the glaze over the ham. Increase oven to 425°F/220°C and place the ham back in the oven, uncovered.

  • Finish baking until the ham is crispy on the outside and the internal temperature is at least 140°F/60°C.

  • Optional serving: Combine the juices from the roasting pan and the remaining glaze in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 5 minutes or until thickened. Brush the glaze onto the ham when serving or serve alongside in a bowl for everyone to add as they like.

FAQs

Do you put glaze on ham before or after cooking? ›

The glaze should not be applied until the final hour to 30 minutes, in order to avoid burning the sugars. What you're going to do with the glaze ingredients is just combine most of them into a paste, and then apply it to the ham. After that, the heat in your oven will take care of everything.

How do you keep a glazed ham moist? ›

Cover the ham to keep it moist! I've found that just tenting the ham with foil does the job. Keep it tented until you brush on the glaze. Once glaze in on the ham, remove the foil so the glaze has a chance to get all caramelized and yummy.

Should you soak a ham before baking? ›

Depending on how the ham was cured, it will most probably be necessary to soak the ham for 24 hours before baking it. This step isn't necessary when boiling a ham as the boiling process automatically removes any excess salt, but it is a foolish errand to bake a salt cured ham without soaking..

How long does it take to cook a fully cooked spiral ham? ›

How long does it take to reheat a spiral cut ham? According to most package instructions it takes 12-15 minutes per pound at 275°F. If you are glazing the ham, allow for an additional 10 minutes for the glaze to set at 425°F. The USDA recommends cooking a pre smoked ham to an internal temperature of 140°F.

Do you glaze before or after cooking? ›

Pro Tips for Making a Glaze

When cooking with a glaze, your meat or vegetables need to be almost fully cooked through before applying the glaze. Apply it at the very end of cooking process, as prolonged cooking can cause the high sugar content to burn and become bitter.

Do you cook a ham face down or on its side? ›

Place ham, flat side down, on rack in shallow roasting pan; cover tightly with aluminum foil. Bake approximately 13 to 18 minutes per pound until heated through. Remove ham from oven. Glaze as directed below or let stand, covered, 10 minutes before serving.

What is the best way to prepare a precooked ham? ›

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Place the ham on a rack in a large baking pan and add about 1/4- to 1/2 inch of water to the pan. If the ham is labeled "fully cooked" (does not require heating), heat it in the oven for about 10 minutes per pound, or to an internal temperature of 140 F.

Should I bring my ham to room temperature before cooking? ›

While baking a show-stopping ham is simple and easy, be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to bring the ham to room temperature for an hour (for even heat distribution) as well as up to 2 1/2 hours to bake it long, low and slow, depending on your ham's size.

Do you cook a ham covered or uncovered? ›

Ham is traditionally baked in the oven. Cook for approximately 15 to 20 minutes per pound at 300 F. No matter the size of the ham and the temperature of the oven, it should be cooked until the internal temperature reaches 140 F. Covering with foil throughout the cooking process keeps it moist.

How do you tell if a precooked ham is done? ›

For cooked hams that have been repackaged in any other location outside the plant or for leftover cooked ham, heat to 165 °F (73.9 °C). Cook all raw fresh ham and ready-to-eat ham to a minimum internal temperature of 145 °F (62.8 °C) as measured with a food thermometer before removing meat from the heat source.

How long to cook a 10 lb fully cooked ham at 325 degrees? ›

Cooking Temperature and Time

If the ham is a half ham weighing five to seven pounds, it should heat at 325°F for 22-25 minutes per pound. If it is a whole ham weighing between 10 to 14 pounds, heat the ham at 325°F for 18-20 minutes per pound. The internal temperature should be 140°F.

How do you use the glaze packet that comes with the ham? ›

Whether you heat your spiral ham in the slow cooker or oven, all you have to do is open the glaze packet and apply it 30 minutes before your ham is finished cooking. By the time it's ready to serve, you'll have a satiny-glazed ham without any of the time or effort it takes to make a ham glaze.

How do you get glaze to stick to ham? ›

The glazing part is no different to brushing and basting anything that's marinated!
  1. Pour / brush the glaze onto the ham. ...
  2. Baste every 20 minutes as it bakes with reserved Glaze and pan juices.
  3. Initially, the glaze won't stick to the fat but the longer it's in the oven, the thicker the glaze gets.

How do you heat and glaze a fully cooked ham? ›

Add water to the bottom of the pan and cover the whole thing tightly with foil. Bake at 325F for 16-20 minutes per pound, until a meat thermometer registers 135F. Unwrap the ham and apply the glaze; increase the heat to 400F and bake for 15-20 minutes longer until the glaze is burnished.

Do you cook a precooked ham, covered or uncovered? ›

Bake the ham in the preheated oven, uncovered, for 2 1/2 to 3 hours or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest portion registers 140°F, basting every 30 minutes with 1/2 cup of the glaze. Be sure to keep an eye on the ham, and cover it loosely with foil if it starts getting too dark.
