Fresh and Fragrant Fall Simmer Pot Recipe – Follow The Yellow Brick Home (2024)

Hello friends! Today I am sharing a delicious smelling all-natural fall simmer pot recipe that will put everyone in a fall mood (even if it’s still 90 degrees in October!) This fall has been extremely hot for most of the United States which has made it a little harder to feel those cozy fall vibes we all love. Scents are very powerful in evoking memories and moods, but I am sensitive to most candles. Over the last few years I have relied more and more on essential oils and simmer pot recipes to keep our home smelling fresh and clean.

As I was doing some fall decorating this weekend I used one of my favorite fall simmers to fill our home with the aroma of fall. This particular simmer is fresh and fragrant, perfect for when you want your home to have smell clean with cozy fall undertones.

Lemon, Rosemary, Sage and Cinnamon Fall Simmer

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 3-6 fresh sage leaves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks or 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla (optional)
  • 4-6 slices fresh lemon

Add all ingredients to a small pot or pan and add enough water to completely cover the ingredients. Simmer on low heat for up 45 minutes, adding more water if necessary due to evaporation.

Fresh herbs are the key ingredients of the simmer. I use herbs from my garden, but you can easily find sage and rosemary at the grocery store.

Rosemary is my favorite herb! It is highly aromatic so it works well in simmer recipes. This summer I have had great luck with a rosemary plant that has now grown into a bush right outside our side door off from the kitchen. Apparently it has loved this relentless heat! For my fresh fall simmer recipe I simply snipped off four of five sprigs. The great thing about herbs is that the more you snip, the more they grow!

I also have several varieties of sage growing in pots. I snipped off a few of my Berggarten sage leaves for the simmer.

Before simmering I rinsed the herbs to get rid of any dirt or tiny critters.

In addition to the herbs I used one lemon and two cinnamon sticks. If you you don’t have cinnamon sticks on hand you can sprinkle liberal amounts of cinnamon in the pot.

I fell in love with simmers years ago after smelling them in Williams Sonoma. Their stores are filled with beautiful culinary treasures which inspire me to get cookin,’ especially for fall and the holidays!

The simple Williams Sonoma simmer recipe is made up of lemon, rosemary and vanilla. This is a wonderful year-round scent that I like to use to keep our home smelling fresh. In the fall I add cinnamon sticks which really makes it smell like yummy things are cooking in the kitchen.

I think the vanilla is an optional ingredient for those who prefer the sweeter scents. If you like fresh and clean, simply omit the vanilla. Both recipes smell amazing to me!

I sliced up a whole lemon but I only used four slices for the first 20-30 minutes of simmering. The longer it simmers the less fragrant it becomes, so I always add another slice or two after a while to make the scent strong again.

I like to use a small copper pan for simmering. I add just enough water to completely submerse the ingredients. The water does evaporate after a while so I just add a bit more water if I want to keep simmering longer. You can always use a larger pot, just be sure to double or triple the recipe depending on the size of pot you use. I have also used a small crock pot for my simmers.
