Graduate Assistant for Aquatics – SRWC (2024)

Purpose

The primary responsibility of the Graduate Assistant for Aquatics is to work directly with the Program Coordinator for Aquatics to enhance the aquatics program and to oversee the day-to-day operations of the pool and safety protocols. This Graduate Assistant will be responsible for supervising, mentoring and recognizing the undergraduate student staff while ensuring a safe and injury free environment. This person will need to be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

• Fully admitted status in Graduate School at UNLV.

• Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Required.

• Current Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) Certification Required.

• Current CPR/ First Aid/AED Certifications Required.

• Must be available to work a minimum of 20-30 hours per week, to include nights and weekends.

• Minimum GPA requirements: Semester GPA: 3.0; Cumulative GPA: 3.0

Physical Demands

• Ability to react to emergencies by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.

• In situations where the GA is filling in for a student lifeguard, the GA is required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking on deck for various lengths of time.

Preferred Qualifications

• Water Safety Instructor Certification.

• Certified Pool Operator Certification.

• Experience working within a campus recreational setting and direct management of student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Development and coordination of aquatics programs and services, including planning, programming, implementing, and assessment.

• Knowledge of pool operations and maintenance, and inventory controls methods.

• Recruitment, training, scheduling and evaluation of the student staff.

• Oversee and monitor student payroll within the aquatics department.

• Monitor safety, security and risk management issues for the facility.

• Work with SU Event Coordinators to ensure a positive and successful outcome of special events.

• Conduct CPR, First Aid and Lifeguarding classes.

• Perform other duties as assigned

Staff Development:

• Develop and implement policies and procedures.

• Provide educational development and workshops for all CRS staff in regards to safety and risk management.

• Leadership development including staff training in customer services, leadership skills, communication and organization skills, and team building.

• Manage all Red Cross certification classes facilitated by CRS staff.

• Develop a working relationship with SUES professional staff and support special event staff assigned to work the events.

• Must act and represent CRS in a positive and professional manner.

• Maintain a professional standard of performance on daily tasks.

• Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings for all areas necessary.

• Communicate clear and concise information as needed to patrons and guests.

• Adhere to all SRWC guidelines and non-negotiables.

Criteria for Success:

• Ability to develop student staff, including hiring, training, supervising and evaluation.

• Provides instruction and teaching of water safety skills to students and patrons.

• Maintains student employment records, certifications, payroll and files.

• Ability to provide excellent customer service to all patrons and guests.

• Ability to work closely with fellow team members as well as Student Union Event Services staff members.

• Demonstrates strong inter-personal and communication skills as well as attention to detail.

• Ability to problem solve, manage multiple tasks and priorities and make an informed decision independently.

• Reliability and flexibility related to work schedule.

• Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies.

• Ability to display a positive attitude for all patrons and CRS staff.

• Positively promotes UNLV and CRS to peers and patrons and takes initiative to be involved throughout campus.

Evaluation will be based on self, peer and supervisory evaluations.

Minimum Hours: 20 hours/week, including nights and weekends. There is the potential to work an additional 10 hours/week at $15/hour with supervisor approval.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT

August 2024 – May 2025

SALARY $17,000 Stipend for Masters

The Graduate Assistantship is a nine-month appointment. Summer employment and second year contract assignment is based on performance. Compensation for 80% of credit hours up to 9 credits per semester covered. Majority of Student Health Insurance premium covered.
