What does a black dot mean on a weather radar? ›

Black dots represent divergence centers. Arrow length is proportional to wind speed. Negative (positive) Doppler velocities represent flow toward (away from) the radar. (

Postpone outdoor activities until the storms have passed. If caught outside, take shelter in a sturdy enclosed building or hard top automobile immediately. Avoid open spaces, isolated objects, high ground and metallic objects. Get out of boats and away from bodies of water.

If the radar shows a strong area of rotation and a debris ball in the same area, it is a strong signature that there is a tornado occurring.

Myth: If you are in a house, you are 100% safe from lightning. Fact: A house is a safe place to be during a thunderstorm as long as you avoid anything that conducts electricity. This means staying off corded phones, electrical appliances, wires, TV cables, computers, plumbing, metal doors and windows.

In nature, a lightning flash and the associated thunder occur at almost the same time in a thunderstorm. A person on the ground sees the lightning flash before hearing the thunder because light at a speed of around 300,000,000 meters per second travels much faster than sound which moves at 340 meters per second.

A tornado which is "back-lit" (viewed with the sun behind it) appears very dark. The same tornado, viewed with the sun at the observer's back, may appear gray or brilliant white. Simply put, the dots on the map represent lightning flashes within a thunderstorm. The bigger the dot, the greater the lighting density. Orange dots suggests the most severe conditions and are associated with the strongest storms.

Red indicates the winds moving away from the radar whereas green displays the winds moving toward the radar. Brighter shades identify faster winds whereas darker shades show slower winds. Such maps typically indicate a tornado by a smaller area of red surrounded by a larger area of green.
